DESCRIPTION
Responsible for network architecture, security, and day-to-day operations of a 100+ workstation local area network including CATI and scanning labs. Provide both server and desktop technical support to all users and maintain all printers, faxes, and copy machines.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBLITIES
Manage system architecture and design of computing systems in a complex heterogeneous environment.
Provide timely and effective technical assistance to all users of departmental computing and networking resources.
Perform systems administration tasks including: configuration and installation of servers, workstations, and personal computers; data backup and recovery; installation and support of software applications and licenses; development and maintenance of systems.
Maintain reliable, secure and robust operation of department servers and networks: installation and updates of operating systems and software releases, system upgrades, databases, firewalls, , and other network services;
Configure, install, and maintain computing applications used by departmental users and applications required for instructional and research use on servers and within teaching and research laboratories.
Support, monitor, test and troubleshoot hardware and software issues on SDRG servers and desktops.
Support and maintain end user requirements, account maintenance, and training.
Plan and perform appropriate IT procedures, documentation, inventory assessment, and other procedures related to IT.
Play a lead role in developing, implementing, and regularly testing an IT disaster recovery plan.
Work with SDRG staff to automate management tasks, streamline processes and perform standard administration functions as needed.
Manage the IT system to meet strategic goals.
Be the primary liaison to the UW for C&C, telephone and photocopying services.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
SKILLS REQUIRED
Experience managing and administering Windows Servers in Active Directory domain environment.
Experience with managing and administering DNS, DHCP,VPN, Web (IIS), Remote Desktop Servers.
Maintain security components and firewall. Strong understanding and experience with managing and administering SQL Server.
Experience in most of the following areas: software license services, WINS NetBIOS name services, Microsoft Data Protection Manager backup and recovery, Sophos antivirus management, Remote Desktop services, securing SMB file shares, and provisioning of BYOD phones and tablets in common use.
Experience with Desktop OS (Windows 7 and above) configuration, installation, and troubleshooting.
Demonstrated ability to investigate, evaluate, and develop creative solutions for research, data collection, academic, instructional, and administrative needs.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Self-starter with the ability to work proactively and independently; able to collaborate with others as part of a larger team, and adequately prioritize incoming IT requests.
Customer service oriented.
Willingness to learn and support unit’s audio/visual technologies.
Thorough knowledge of server and system administration principles
Monitoring IT infrastructure use and providing accountability
REQUIREMENTS
BA/BS in Computer Science or related field or equivalent experience
MCSA / MCSE certified preferred
5+ years’ experience with Microsoft Windows administration environment supporting 50+ users, support of remote users via University of Washington’s VPN technologies, and with group policies: software, security, login and logout functions
4+ years’ experience Internet Information Server (IIS), Web, FTP, SMTP
Experience gathering requirements, prioritizing requests, architecting, implementing and maintaining systems that affordably scale to meet the needs of SDRG
Must have practical exposure to storage and data management products; Dell based servers and storage technologies, preferred.
Maximize system availability and performance through fault-tolerant configuration, efficient network architecture, and proactive server monitoring.
Outstanding customer service skills, as well as excellent verbal and written communications skills.
Demonstrated ability to be a team player and a willingness to lend a hand with any project.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
DESIRED
Familiarity with UW networks and systems
Experience with Unix/Linux basic system administration, user management, file permissions, etc.
Database programming or scripting (MySQL, SQL, MS Access, ); experience developing database solutions with complex data structures and/or user interfaces.
Experience programming (Visual Basic, VBScript, VBA)
Web development (HTML, CSS, PHP, Javascript, ASP)
Experience with Drupal, Wordpress, Joomla
Understanding and production experience with Vmware or Microsoft Hyper-V products.
Experience with installation architecture and updating survey software (Unicom Data Collection 7)
