Our Laboratory Medicine Department has an outstanding opportunity for a night shift, full-time (100%) Specimen Processing Supervisor. The person in this role will supervise the Specimen Processing Services (SPS) area of the Department of Laboratory Medicine, including hiring, progressive discipline, performance management, training and continuing education.
This individual promotes team building by inspiring and motivating subordinates, peers and other laboratory staff by positive attitude toward self, others and the workplace. Provides continuity, consistency and predictability in all specimen processing work sites through a coordinated effort with peers, manager, director and other laboratory staff. Additionally, the Specimen Processing Supervisor ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements and department procedures and policies.
General Duties:
- Oversee the activities of the Clinical Laboratory Technician (CLT) 1 and Leads.
- Develop monthly staff schedule and assess staffing needs with each personnel change and/or in response to workload and departmental changes.
- In cooperation with other SPS Supervisor(s) and/or Manager, conduct interviews, make appropriate hiring recommendations, accurately evaluate pre-hire competencies, submit salary requests, extend job offers and schedule orientation for CLT 1 and Leads.
- Assist with payroll activities by reviewing employee time cards for accuracy and submitting approval prior to deadline.
- Continually develop and re-evaluate strategies to meet requirements and shape superior performance for all employees in the service.
- Conduct new employee division orientation and oversee its completion.
- Ensure all mandatory organization, department and division training requirements are met for all area personnel.
- Identify individual staff in need of training and development resources (cultural diversity, communication and feedback, work style conflict resolution, team building, leadership, etc.).
- Identify general staff training needs for existing and new employees and arrange for in-service presentations (customer service, clinical test information, equipment, tasks specific to technical laboratory functions).
- Attend departmental meetings appropriate for specimen processing Area Supervisor participation (Department Supervisor Meetings, Safety Meeting, Nursing Liaison Meetings, Specimen Processing Meetings, etc.).
- Collaborate with Manager and other Supervisors to set agenda for and conduct monthly SPS Staff Meetings and weekly Lead Meetings.
- Complete individual rounding sessions with staff and submit summary report prior to monthly deadline.
- Perform initial competency assessment and annual formal performance evaluations for each employee, including CLT 1 and Lead staff.
- Continuously track and manage performance with counsel from Department Human Resources Manager.
- Work with Technical Coordinator, manager, staff, other division supervisors and faculty on need for new and/or revised policies and procedures.
- Coordinate with other Area Supervisors and Manager to review and revise as appropriate.
- Create and facilitate staff tasks force/CQI (Continuous Quality Improvement) teams when appropriate.
- Review and respond to incident reports related to technical errors and employee and/or patient safety via the Patient Safety Net (PSN) or other departmental and/or divisional reporting methods.
- Review QA log of incident reports and target areas for aggressive collaborative problem solving utilizing a SQI approach.
- Initiate and coordinate search for solutions.
- Review Quality Feedback Form trends and Quality Assurance Form trends to identify areas for individual and group training and/or systemic improvements.
- Provide updated recommendations to the Manager regarding the MBO plan, implement and report MBO outcomes to Manager.
- Respond to technical (specimen/procedural) problems that the technical
and operations leads are not able to address.
- Coordinate with the Technical Coordinator to resolve immediate and procedural specimen problems.
- Provide emergency coverage in Processing and Transfusion Support Services Areas.
- Coordinate with the Technical Coordinator to remain abreast of technical processing issues.
- Perform tasks and responsibilities of CLT/LT1, CLT/LT Lead, CLT/LT2, Operations and Special Projects Leads.
- Oversee provide backup and serve as a resource for billing resolution, supply ordering, records maintenance including archiving activities.
- Ensure all equipment is maintained and required documentation is
adequate.
- Prepare for JCAHO and CAP inspections.
- Perform other duties as required.
Minimum Requirements:
Two years of college-level science in an applicable field AND one year of experience as a Specimen Processing Technician Lead;

High School graduation or GED Certification AND two years of clinical laboratory experience in a Clinical or Public Health Laboratory;
-OR-
equivalent education/experience.
