The Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity has an outstanding opportunity for a STEM Instructor.
Under the supervision of the Executive Director for Retention & Academic Support Programs, the STEM Instructor is responsible for teaching a wide variety of skills to TRIO SSS students in preparing and assisting them with STEM courses at the University level. Primary responsibilities are providing group workshops, study groups, and individualized instructional support to student participants. In addition to instruction, the individual in this position will work with the SSS team to develop strategies and monitor student progress to reach program goals and objectives.
The STEM Instructor for TRIO SSS will work with staff in the Instructional Center and Academic Counseling Services to promote and develop strategies and policies related to work with undergraduate student preparation for first generation to college students, low-income students, and student with disabilities. The STEM Instructor will work with UW faculty and staff to develop initiatives that will support TRIO SSS eligible students across campus.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Teaching project participants various levels of scientific inquiry, from basic skills to advanced levels in a wide variety of science courses; developing curriculum materials as needed; providing individualized & group instruction sessions.
• Developing and implementing seminars & workshops to assist students in their academic progress and meet program goals and objectives.
• Building and administering curricular and co-curricular programming designed to increase SSS student participation and success in STEM courses and majors.
• Documenting and monitoring students needs and progress with attendance and student contract requirements, performance and grades, for evaluation activities.
• Advising students, in cooperation with Student Support Services counselors, on a broad range of academic problems.
• Advising the Executive Director and staff of academic requirements or curriculum changes; participation in weekly meetings with staff to monitor and evaluate program.
• Perform related duties as required.
REQUIREMENTS:
• Master’s degree in biology, chemistry, or related field required
• Three years teaching experience in science and/or math in a higher education setting; history of working with a diverse multicultural student population, which includes working with low income, first generation, and/or disabled populations; strong organizational skills, including strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communications skills and attention to detail.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
DESIRED EXPERIENCE
• PhD in biology, chemistry, or related field preferred
