The STUDENT ACTIVITIES OFFICE (SAO), a unit within the Husky Union Building (HUB), educates and encourages students in leadership, social responsibility, and values. With a focus of fun and engagement in all of its processes, we serve over 900 Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) along with graduate and undergraduate student government leaders, volunteers of the Associated Students of the University of Washington (ASUW) and the Graduate & Professional Student Senate (GPSS).
The STUDENT ACTIVITIES OFFICE has an outstanding opportunity for a Student Activities Advisor who enjoys engaging with students on a daily basis. A service-oriented person who exhibits and promotes enthusiasm, patience and has an eye for detail; all the while working and performing in an energetic, fun and vibrant environment. A sense of humor and a positive outlook is essential for this position.
The Student Activities Advisor provides advice and guidance to student government, registered student organization members and leaders regarding event and program planning, event fund procurement, interpretation of University policies, training and leadership develop for students with diverse academic, social, political and cultural perspectives.
Duties and Responsibilities
•Coordinate and assist in the implementation of programs designed to enhance the educational development of students participating in extra and co-curricular activities. Provide support for the orientation, training, and evaluation of student programmers.
•Advise specified Associated Students of the University of Washington (ASUW) on programs and services that may have more complex aspects such as producing revenue, budget analysis, supervision of student employees and related personnel issues, and customer service.
•Advise and assist specified ASUW commissions or student organizations in program development and implementation including use of services and facilities. Participate in an advisory capacity to various ASUW committees.
•Interpret University and state policies, procedures, and regulations, and other legal requirements as they relate to the expenditure of ASUW and funds, with the ability to explain policies and intent/rationale to students.
•Monitor student organization programs in compliance with applicable state, University, Husky Union Building (HUB), and ASUW policies, rules, and regulations.
•Maintain and update historical records and files related to assigned committees and programs.
•Serve as liaison with University departments, agents, and promoters and assist with preparation of programming contracts and agreements.
•Keep Assistant Director advised of emerging and ongoing issues among student organizations. Prepare reports and statistical data as required by the Assistant Director, and other duties as assigned.
Advising Assignments
Advising assignments may include, but are not limited to, multiple categories of student organizations, undergraduate or graduate student government committees, programs or services.
Examples of Student Government advising include but are not limited to:
•ASUW Middle Eastern Student Commission
•ASUW Sexual Assault and Relationship Violence Activists
•ASUW Women’s Action Commission
•ASUW Election Administration Committee
•ASUW Student Health Consortium
•GPSS Programming with the Vice President of Internal Affairs
•ASUW Office of Communications & Technology
•Campus Safety and Homecoming Committees.
Examples of Registered Student Organization advising assignments include but are not limited to:
•Engineering
•Medical/Dental/Nursing Pharmacy
•Health Science

Supervision received from the Assistant Director of Student Activities.
Functional supervision/advisement of two to seven ASUW Commission Program Directors or committee chairs.

Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree and 2 years’ full-time student activities or related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired. Experience working with and sensitivity to, diverse groups of students. Knowledge of trends and issues affecting historically underrepresented and marginalized student communities.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.
Preferred Qualifications
• Master's degree in Higher Education / Student Affairs, or a related field
• A comprehensive knowledge of higher education administration and student development / student personnel. Experience working at a large urban university, working with social justice issues, and with socially active student movements.
