The UWMC SURGICAL PAVILION has an outstanding opportunity for a FULL-TIME SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST (NIGHT SHIFTS). Under direction of the Charge Nurse and RN3, the Surgical Technologist will prepare operating rooms for surgical procedures; obtain, assemble, and arrange sterile instruments and supplies used for surgical procedures; perform scrub role; and maintain patient safety throughout perioperative care. The person in this role will use effective communication skills to enhance teamwork and customer service; and be flexible and proactive to support an efficient and effective surgical environment.
Additional Surgical Technologist responsibilities include:
Surgical preparation:
• Check surgical schedule for caseload.
• Examine the surgical preference lists; consult with RN and/or surgeon.
• Review patient historical information.
• Coordinate activities with the Core Staff and implant room staff.
• Physically pull the instrumentation from the staging areas.
• Obtain, assemble, and arrange sterile instruments and supplies used for surgical procedures
Collaboration with surgical team:
• Perform scrub role: maintain patient safety throughout perioperative care by maintain a sterile surgical environment.
• Gown and glove surgical team members.
• Pass surgical instruments to the surgeon.
• Anticipate requests of ongoing needs during the surgical procedure.
• Assist in monitoring patient care activities, such as positioning, procedure preparations, and active involvement during the Surgical Patient Safety Checklist.
• Enhance customer service with effective communication to support teamwork.
• Monitor items used on the sterile field including the safe handling of sterile equipment during a procedure.
• Perform surgical counts with the Circulator.
• Maintain vigilance of items used during a surgical procedures.
• Actively communicate breaks in sterile technique or equipment failure.
Post-operation responsibilities:
• Remove contaminated instrumentation.
• Communicate needs to the CSPD staff regarding immediate instrument decontamination.
• Initiate immediate-use sterilization.
• Remove unused items from the surgical environment.
• Help in the turnover of the Operating Room.
• Prepare the next procedure by checking the case cart and obtain any needed supplies.
• Check with other surgical rooms to offer assistance.
• Additional assistance as necessary.

LEGAL REQUIREMENT: Registered by the State of Washington as a Surgical Technologist, or licensed in the State of Washington as a Licensed Practical Nurse, Registered Nurse or Physician.
