The School of Nursing has an outstanding opportunity for a Systems Administrator. Under the general direction of the University of Washington School of Nursing (UW SoN) Assistant Director of Learning and Information Technologies, as part of the SoN Infrastructure Operations team, Systems Administrators support the operation of a complex networked computing environment to meet the School’s current and emerging information technology needs.
This position is a critical member of the SoN operations, providing technical expertise in the areas of academic, staff, and student IT matters. The position implements best practices and guidelines for all IT efforts within the SoN. The Systems Administrator must stay informed about the current state of technology to make appropriate recommendations regarding maintenance and upgrades to UW SoN IT systems. This position requires a commitment to client service, the ability to work collaboratively in a changing environment, and the skill to work with other members of the University community (faculty, staff, and students) who have diverse technology skills.
The Systems Administrator employs a variety of skills and aptitudes, which include a broad technical knowledge, a deep understanding of the business needs of the School, and outstanding decision-making abilities. The System Administrator uses these to support and further the School's strategic goals.
The Systems Administrator assures that UW SoN faculty and staff technology needs are met, provides excellent client services and support, maintains maximum uptime, and provides a secure and friendly environment that is conducive to advancing education and research. They provide critical technical support to UW SoN faculty and staff while playing a key role in supporting the on-going mission and strategic plan of the School of Nursing. This position must ensure that UW SoN initiatives are aligned with the UW SoN Mission and Vision, and with strategic direction from UW-IT.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position is supervised by the Director of L&IT, who directly manages infrastructure operations, and who reports to the Assistant Dean of Technology, Learning, and Innovation. Work assignments are directed by the Director of L&IT on issues related to computing services, information and knowledge management, and other duties based on feedback from helpdesk, monitoring systems, user feedback, and personal initiative. Work assignments related to curricular support technologies, distance learning and Instructional systems are derived from the Learning Technologies team and are assigned by the Director of L&IT.
The SoN’s network is composed primarily of Windows servers in Active Directory running in an outsourced Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) environment. Workstations consist of PC running Windows and Macs running OSX.
Operations
• Leveraging expert-level training and experience, acting as the highest point of technical issue escalation within UW SoN L&IT, the Systems Administrator will analyze and resolve issues with complex systems consisting of servers, workstations, and mobile devices.
• Represent the UW SoN to the University of Washington IT department (UW-IT) unit to manage the UW SoN’s needs and responsibilities of analyzing, testing, documenting, and troubleshooting a large and complex network spanning multiple IP subnets and physical locations.
• Design, deploy, monitor, and troubleshoot servers in a hosted IaaS environment to ensure the high-availability of L&IT’s core services.
• Develop and maintain operational documentation of core IT servers and services.
• Research, recommend, and implement information management process and procedure best practices to ensure that all UW SoN data is protected through appropriate security, redundancy, and backups.
• Investigate, design, and create remote access services to enable remote workers.
• Analyze and revise UW SoN's IT systems to ensure they are compliant and consistent with regulations from HIPAA, FERPA, the UW Human Subject Review Board, and the UW Administrative Policy.
• Work closely with L&IT’s Web Application Developer to provide a robust and reliable platform to support the UW SoN’s Web Applications and Web Presence.
Ongoing Service Improvements
• Consult with departments and functional units, analyze their unique business requirements, and design and deploy sustainable infrastructure strategies.
• Consult with our Learning Technologies professionals to design, deploy, and maintain media and web services in support of their mission.
Other duties

REQUIREMENTS:
• Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field.
• An equivalent combination of experience and education may substitute for the degree requirement.
• At least four years of increasing responsibilities while delivering information technology services in a complex environment.
• At least two years experience as a Systems Administrator or equivalent position delivering highly available services in a Windows Active Directory environment.
• Expert level knowledge of TCP/IP networks.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently.
• Ability to handle confidential information responsibly.
• Ability to manage multiple projects with critical deadlines.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.
Desired:
• Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA) or Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE)
• Experience working in academic and/or health care IT positions.
• Expertise with the following:
o Subnetting, DHCP, WINS, DNS, and Firewalls
o Scripting with PowerShell, VBScript, etc.
o Microsoft SQL Server.
o Deploying Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) as an application platform.
o Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) with Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS).
o Supporting Content Management Systems (CMS) such as WordPress and Drupal.
o Federated Authentication using Shibboleth, SAML, ADFS or LDAP.
o Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).
o Learning Management Systems such as Canvas and Moodle.
o Using the UW-IT Groups Service tool.
o Working with the UW-IT Delegated OU Service.
