The Department of Surgery, Division of General Surgery within the University of Washington School of Medicine is recruiting for a full-time Advanced Practice Provider (ARNP or PA) at the rank of Teaching Associate. This is a faculty position and will be based primarily at the University of Washington Medical Center’s Northwest Campus (UWMC- Northwest) in the Surgical Services and Hernia Center (SSHC). The anticipated start date for this position is winter 2020.
The Teaching Associate appointment is a 12-month term, with reappointment recommendation on an annual basis. This faculty position will engage in clinical care, teaching, and quality improvement. The UWMC- Northwest SSHC Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is a member of the SSHC team that includes attending physicians, residents, medical students, and fellows providing services to UW Medicine patients/families and collaborating with other clinical teams, nursing, social work and other therapists on staff. The APP will be responsible for providing services independently and collaboratively with appropriate privileges, including initial and ongoing assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patient’s medical and psychosocial status.
Practice and Performance Expectations
1. Provides timely patient and family assessment for General Surgery patients in the inpatient setting.
2. Independently evaluates and manages new, return, and post-operative patients in the outpatient clinic setting.
3. Support surgeons in the OR as a first assist when resident coverage is unavailable.
4. Collaborates with the physicians, primary care providers, subspecialty providers, and outpatient therapists to ensure coordination and continuity of care across settings.
5. Attends appropriate clinical meetings to serve as a resource for staff and providers.
6. Provides patient and/or family with health education, counseling and referrals to other health professionals and community resources as appropriate.
7. Participates as a key member of the interdisciplinary team through the development of collaborative and innovative practices and evaluation of patient care outcomes.
8. Evaluates quality outcomes for SSHC the Surgery Service through participation in the development of quality indicators including: Patient Satisfaction, LOS, & time to discharge
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Current and valid state licensure as an ARNP or PA, and Graduate Degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program or Graduate of an accredited PA Program
2. Nationally Certified ARNP or PA-C with DEA
3. Proven excellence working in an interdisciplinary collaborative team environment
4. Effective interpersonal skills, leadership skills, and clinical expertise in the care of patients with Surgery conditions requiring inpatient services.
5. Training and experience in inpatient/outpatient surgical service.
6. Experience with or interest in surgical first assisting.
