One Full-time (100% FTE) Position for Teaching Associate Advanced Practice Provider (APP-- ARNP or PA-C)
Faculty Appointment: Teaching Associate/ARNP or PA without tenure position in the Division of Cardiology is a full-time, one-year, 12 month appointment, renewable annually (JCC: 0169).
Job Description:
Patient access is a UW Heart Institute priority. The number of patients seen by UW Cardiologists have grown dramatically over the last decade and there is a current need for access at our Northwest Hospital site. The Cardiology APP, serving in this new role, will independently see patients recently discharged from the UWMC Cardiology Services (both Montlake and Northwest campuses) and see follow-up established Cardiology patients with any number of chronic cardiac issues, or who are recovering from an acute cardiac event. This includes taking a medical history, conducting and interpreting stress tests, monitoring and prescribe medications, and patient education and counseling promoting healthy lifestyle changes. This APP will practice solely in the outpatient clinic. University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service.
Reports to: Cardiology Service Director and Cardiology Lead Advanced Practice Provider
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Current and valid licensure as an ARNP or PA-C in Washington State
2. Graduate Degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program or graduate of an accredited PA program, or foreign equivalent.
3. Nationally certified ARNP/PA with DEA
4. Proven excellence working in an interdisciplinary collaborative team environment
5. Excellent interpersonal skills, leadership skills, and clinical expertise in the care of patients with chronic and acute cardiovascular illnesses.
Desirable Qualifications
1. Training and experience in inpatient cardiology or CCU/ICU management preferred
2. ACLS Certification
The Cardiology APP will have the following responsibilities:
1. Clinical Knowledge and Patient Care
Cardiology APPs are highly reliable, flexible team members and serve as content experts for the provision of outpatient cardiology therapies. They daily demonstrate attributes of high functioning team members such as, lack of excessive ego and concerns about status. They share credit and emphasize team over self. They are self-motivated and diligent constantly striving for improvements in patient care processes. They are respectful of their colleagues in both words and actions, working cooperatively with one another and their physician, nurse and medical assistant partners.
The APP will:
a. Demonstrate knowledge of etiologies, risk factors, pathophysiology, presentation and epidemiology of common cardiovascular conditions.
b. Perform histories and physical assessment of patients that timely, accurate, complete, concise, relevant and appropriate to the clinical problem.
c. Order appropriate diagnostic studies and correctly interprets the results.
d. Utilizes critical thinking to synthesize and analyze collected data.
e. Develop, implement, evaluate and alter the plan of care as needed.
f. Manage general cardiovascular conditions based on knowledge of the indications, contraindications, side effects, interactions and adverse reactions of pharmacologic agents and other relevant treatment modalities.
g. Teach and counsel patient and their families.
h. Maintain accurate, complete, concise and timely documentation in the EMR.
i. Provider care that is patient and family centered, compassionate, appropriate and effective for the promotion of cardiovascular health, prevention illness and treatment of disease.
The APP will provide the above care services in a manner that optimizes access to care and use of standard clinic templates.
2. Communication and Interdisciplinary Collaboration
The APP will:
a. Incorporate the patient and family in care planning and treatment.
b. Serves as an advocate for patient and families in navigating the health system.
c. Communicates pertinent clinical information in a timely manner.
d. Facilitate interprofessional collaboration.
e. Promote and enhance communication with patients, staff, family members, and the interprofessional team.
f. Provides accurate and timely verbal hand-offs and facilitating smooth transitions of care
g. Serve as a point person for communications among service team members
h. Communicate in a professional and respectful manner with all members of the health care team whether through verbal, email, or text communication
i. Provide accurate and timely order entry
j. Provide timely and accurate documentation.
k. Practice and promote the practice of communication using TeamSTEPPS elements (including daily huddling with MA and RNs)
3. Professional
The APP will:
l. Participate in and support the Division’s education, research and quality initiatives.
m. Provide education and mentorship to fellow team members, staff, fellows, and nurses.
n. Attend weekly Cardiology Grand Rounds and quarterly faculty meetings.
o. Be well versed in UWMC CPOE/EPIC
p. Follow UWMC Professional Behavior Policy and Procedures
