Health Science Administration (HSA) has an outstanding opportunity for the position of Temporary Full Time Web Computing Specialist.
Position Purpose:
Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) currently has an outstanding opportunity for a Web Computing Specialist. This position serves as a key member of the Planning & Administration team. Under the general direction of the University of Washington Information Technology Solutions (ITS) Manager, the Web Computing Specialist is responsible for computer system administration, analysis, design, development, maintenance, webmaster duties, and database administration for EH&S. The focus of this position is technical development, maintenance, and support for business applications and related integrations that support EH&S operations. This position requires collaboration with internal teams as well as external groups to ensure that applications and integrations are well designed, robust, and reliable. The initial focus for this position will be converting existing, internal systems to web applications or other appropriate technology. Working independently and as a team member, the successful candidate will work closely with users, developers, managers and other stakeholders to provide support and training, resolve client and system-related issues, and determine functional and technical requirements including configuring, installing, and maintaining computing applications that support EH&S business processes. The Web Computing Specialist is responsible for assessing data needs, translating business process information into uniform database solutions, and applying business standards beyond what may be articulated in client specifications in order to ensure accuracy and consistency across platforms. Working in a fast paced, dynamic, deadline driven environment, the ideal candidate will exhibit outstanding individual initiative, project management skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects efficiently and effectively by setting priorities. All EH&S staff are expected to demonstrate the highest level of professionalism, ethical conduct, collaboration, and customer service in the execution of their duties.
Responsibilities:
· Develop new web applications and extend functionality of existing applications
· Utilize PHP, Python, JavaScript, application frameworks, APIs, and SQL databases to create, extend, and maintain custom internal and external facing applications
· Build reusable code and libraries for future use and improve existing code and its design by applying appropriate refactoring
· Test code, features, business rules, and integrations
· Centralize data warehouse utilization
· Install and maintain application dependencies
· Write and maintain thorough documentation of all programs and procedures
· Troubleshoot and resolve complex database issues
· Meet with customers to gather business requirements
· Define and develop workflows related to business processes that require automation
· Track and execute multiple projects while maintaining a high level of attention to detail
· Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills
· Test and evaluate work products to ensure accuracy on an ongoing basis
· Work closely with other staff members to collect requirements, estimate work, and ensure that projects are delivered according to schedule
· Plan for, coordinate, and execute software deployments
· Assist with design of web application front end and database backend
· Become familiar with existing technology environment
· Explore new technologies and make recommendations for adoption
· Learn cutting-edge methods and how to apply them
· Communicate clearly and effectively while contributing as a productive member of the Information Technology Solutions team
· Participate in the overall department, carrying out other duties as required
Requirements:
· Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field, or equivalent experience as a database developer
· Three years of experience as a full stack web developer
· Outstanding interpersonal skills, including team and relationship building
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills and decision making skills
· Self-starter with demonstrated ability to learn and adapt to new methods and processes
· Proven ability to independently prioritize work assignments and meet deadlines
· Willingness to assist coworkers as needed
Additional Requirements:
· Excellent interpersonal skills, including a strong team ethic
· Solid grasp of technologies including PHP, Python, JavaScript, SQL, HTML, and CSS
· Experience learning new technology and applying when appropriate
· Experience implementing Web UIs from conceptual designs
· Experience in development, querying and manipulating data and structures in an RDBMS such as MySQL
· Experience with the Unix/Linux command line and CLI tools
· Experience with source code management tools such as GitHub
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Desired:
· Experience with unit testing and continuous integration
· Experience with Drupal 7 or 8 module development, configuration, and migration
· Experience with user-centered design
· Experience consuming and implementing Web APIs
· Experience with Node.js, React, and other JavaScript libraries and frameworks
· Experience with agile development methodologies
· Experience with IIS and Windows environment
