Assistant Teaching Professor

The College of Built Environments (CBE) at the University of Washington (UW) invites nominations and applications to join our faculty as an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Department of Urban Design and Planning (UDP). This position will teach in the field of urban design & planning at introductory and advanced levels. The primary teaching responsibilities will be in the undergraduate curriculum (including in the Community, Environment, and Planning program, the UDP minor, and the UDP general education curriculum) but may also include graduate level courses in one or more of the department's graduate level programs. Classes may include medium and large lecture-based courses, seminars, and professionally-oriented courses. Though the majority of these courses will be in the UDP department, there may be opportunity to teach in the Department of Landscape Architecture or the college's interdisciplinary BE curriculum, while also participating in broader curricular development activities within the department and college. The successful applicant will be expected to engage in collaborative and interdisciplinary teaching, mentor students and early career instructors/TA's and support a diverse student population. This position will help sustain and expand UDP's capacity to provide excellent courses and learning opportunities that serve a wide variety of students in the department, the college, and the university.

Responsibilities & Terms
This is a full-time 9-month (Sept 16th - June 15th) appointment with an anticipated start date of September 16, 2022. The expectation for this position is to teach 6-7 classes annually. Teaching faculty are expected to be on campus during the academic year to teach courses, mentor students, and engage in service activities, including advising students, assisting with student organizations, and serving on departmental and college committees. This position is for an initial three-year term with the possibility of multi-year renewal. The position provides full access to the employee benefits offered by UW and is promotable to Associate and Full Teaching Professor. The position is not eligible for tenure.
Required Qualifications:
- Master's degree (or foreign equivalent) in Urban Design and Planning or a related discipline
- A record of excellence in teaching large, medium, or small classes that appeal broadly to students across multiple disciplines relevant to the built environment
- A record of curriculum development and innovation, particularly at the undergraduate level
- Demonstrated ability to teach basic design and planning skills
- A record of successfully integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion content and practice into the classroom
