Front End Web Developer
WHRO Public Media is seeking an experienced Front-End Web Developer who combines technology and design to create engaging user experiences, and will help advance WHRO Public Medias strategic objectives. Everything we do everything we create its always about education and enhancing the lives of citizens in our region.
The successful candidate will have 5+ years of demonstrated front-end UI/UX development and programming experience, including JavaScript frameworks (Vue.JS), jQuery, HTML/CSS, Node.js.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Engaging in multiple, ongoing system implementations using JavaScript/CSS3/HTML5 skills to create and maintain web-based applications, interactive web presentations and landing pages, including education, marketing, fundraising and journalism initiatives
- Working closely with team members to deliver customized solutions
- Documenting, maintaining, and contributing to project stories in project management system
- Implementing front-end design of landing pages and websites using responsive design techniques
- Experience in building, debugging and maintaining RESTful APIs, familiarity with web services, and 3rd party platforms and libraries
- Working with third-party authentication methods
- Pushing and merging code to production
- Assisting the team with scenario testing and bug fixing
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have:
- 5+ years of development experience with one-page JavaScript applications
- Expert knowledge of JavaScript, jQuery, HTML5, CSS3
- Extensive knowledge of REST APIs
- Extensive experience with Git (GitHub or GitLab)
- Extensive experience with Vue.js
- Working knowledge with Sass, Backbone (Marionette), npm, gulp
- Extensive experience with browser-based debugging
- Extensive UX design experience
- Working knowledge of open-source content and learning management systems such as Joomla, WordPress, Moodle, etc.
- Working experience with PHP 7, MySQL is a plus
- Bachelor degree in computer science, or an analytical discipline, or equivalent

- Ability to develop and foster trust amongst team members, by being accountable to other team members, and trusting that each person knows how to do their work
- Work with minimal supervision with wide latitude for independent judgment
- Ability to work independently but also able to communicate cross-functionally to seek out information when required

Work Environment/Physical Demands:
- Will work remotely
- Must have a reliable ISP connection with any US service provider
- Must have reliable cellular telephone service
- Must work during set days and hours
- Must participate in virtual meetings via webcam

This is a remote position with set work days and hours, Mon-Fri from 8am to 5pm ET, with occasional on-site work required at WHRO Public Medias Norfolk office location. Virtual daily stand-ups, and weekly team meetings are mandatory.
WHRO requires that employees working onsite maintain a COVID-19 fully vaccinated status and will be required to provide a copy of their immunization card or certification statement to WHRO’s Human Resources Department.
